A short walk away is the Castello d'Avalos, a Bourbon Royal Palace until the 19th century, when it became a Penal House and a place of imprisonment for lifers.
Terra Murata is the Procidan fortress, the oldest settlement on the island, where islanders have taken refuge since the Middle Ages during pirate raids. The Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel, the island's patron saint, is located there.
